Why Are There Lamps All Over My House?

One thing I've learned about creating a comfortable home is that lighting matters more than most people realize.

When I bought my house, there were a few areas that didn't have overhead lights. Some people might have seen that as a problem. I didn't. In fact, I was perfectly happy with it because I've always preferred lamps over bright overhead lighting.

There's no overhead light in my hallway, and that never bothered me. Instead, I have a lamp sitting on a cute little table with a plant beside it. My living room and dining room didn't have overhead lighting either, and honestly, I was fine with that too. To me, soft lighting feels warmer, more inviting, and much more relaxing than a bright light shining down from the ceiling.

Over time, I added lighting that fit the atmosphere I wanted to create. I installed a large boho-style wicker pendant light above my dining room table and a smaller matching light above my kitchen island. Even though I have overhead lighting in my kitchen, I rarely turn it on. Most of the time, you'll find me using my lamps instead.

And when I say I love lamps, I mean I love lamps. I have lamps in my kitchen, lamps in my office, lamps in my hallway, and lamps throughout my home. Right now, as I'm writing this, I have two lamps on in my office along with a small ring light aimed toward my computer. The soft glow feels comfortable, cozy, and easy on the eyes.

What I've discovered over the years is that creating a home you enjoy isn't always about major renovations or expensive upgrades. Sometimes it's about paying attention to the little things that affect how a room feels.

Lighting changes the mood of a space.

A bright overhead light can make a room feel functional.

A lamp can make that same room feel peaceful.

Neither choice is right or wrong. It comes down to personal preference.

For me, I've always preferred the softer, warmer atmosphere that lamps create. They make a house feel more like a home.

And if you've ever walked into a room and thought something felt a little off, you might be surprised how much difference a simple lamp can make.
